Chiropractic and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

What is carpal tunnel syndrome? Basically, it is a state of the median nerve being compressed at the wrist, which causes to numbness, pain and muscle weakness in the hand. People with carpal tunnel syndrome also tend to wake up in the middle of the night sensing the symptoms in the wrist. Some people seem to be genetically predisposed to this syndrome while most other cases have no clear cut cause.
Some medical personnel agree that the more serious cases of carpal tunnel syndrome that weren’t treated early might need to surgery to improve. Many chiropractors agree that by adjusting the spine at the neck, generally, will relieve the pressure on the median nerve, which travels from the neck to the wrist. There are three major nerves that travel from the neck to the hand and arm. The median nerve is the one that juts down from the neck and travels through and area in the wrist called the carpal tunnel. This area, the carpal tunnel, is the most vulnerable zone for the median nerve. The nerve is open to pressure from tendons and inflammation and overuse or repetitive stress injuries. Pressure from bones in the actual tunnel it travels through (named carpal tunnel), can compress or pinch the median nerve and cause the pain and numbness.
Since the causes of carpal tunnel syndrome are mostly unknown the chiropractor treats the symptoms and the whole nervous system. Many chiropractors begin treatment by working from the neck to the fingertips and then addressing the complete spinal area.
The spine is the nervous system’s main communication center and headquarters. If the headquarters can communicate clearly with all the other systems in the body, then general health of the body increases. One chiropractor was treating a man with carpal tunnel syndrome and after a thorough examination of the patient, discovered that one of the man’s legs was slightly shorter than the other one. This caused a misalignment of his spine, which led to nerve compression in the neck, which caused carpal tunnel syndrome in his wrist.
When the chiropractor treats one symptom or misalignment, then all of the body’s systems come into play. Each system is connected to all the other systems, and the nervous system, who’s functions the chiropractor tries to improve, controls all the systems.
Once the nervous system is improved and nerve communications flow freely, then all of the systems improve and you have a healthier body.
