Chiropractic and Pregnancy

Why does pregnancy cause lower back pain? Well, the obvious answer would be the extra weight you are carrying naturally causes pain if you’re not used to carrying extra weight. And if you are having twins or triplets, or heaven forbid, sextuplets, then the pain could increase exponentially as the babies move closer to the delivery date and gain more weight.

The lower back pain during pregnancy is generally in the lower back or the lumbar region and in the pelvis area, usually at the back of the pelvis. The pelvis and lower back are supporting much more weight than normal and the pain is almost expected from an engineering or anatomical point of view. That’s just how human bodies are built.

The pelvic pain, felt in the buttocks, can be triggered sometimes by doing the most mundane things: lying in bed and then rolling over, walking or going up the stairs and sitting down or getting up in a low seat or chair. Most pregnant women get some kind of pain in their backs, legs and pelvic area, but women who have sedentary lives and who are not very flexible or have weak abdominal and/or back muscles are going to feel the most pain. Once again, that’s just the physics of our body design and once you are pregnant, it’s a little difficult and perhaps a little late to start a rigorous workout program to get into shape.

Pregnancy is not the time to start taking over the counter or prescription drugs to ease that pain, either; there’s another little person in there to consider now. Chiropractors suggest simple and gentle exercises to strengthen those abs and lower back muscles. Of course, the type of exercise you choose depends on how far along the pregnancy is. Many chiropractors feel that light swimming is a very positive kind of physical workout that can do a number of things for the pregnant woman experiencing these kinds of pains. Your pregnant body is buoyant in the water and that alone takes a lot of stress off of your joint and back, but swimming also strengthens the abs and the lower back muscles which will ease some of the pain. It truly is a great relief to so many pregnant women when they discover a pool. And, of course, the water feels so good.

Since you can’t stay in the pool all day, everyday, chiropractors can also help you when you get out of the water. They can help by gently adjusting the spine and easing the pain with no medication at all. You’ll wonder why you waited so long to see a chiropractor and you’ll ask yourself, “Where have they been all of my life?”

There is absolutely no risk to mother or baby when a Doctor of Chiropractic takes control of making you comfortable. You will be in good hands.

When I was pregnant with my now 2 year old son I had sciatica so bad that I couldn't even walk. My MD gave me a presciption of Vicodin but there was no way I was going to take that and risk hurting my baby.

A friend of mine told me I should go see her chiropractor. I was desperate so I gave it a try and it was the best decision I ever made. My sciatica was almost completely gone within 2 weeks of starting treatment. I saw the chiropractor once a week for the rest of my pregnancy and it helped me have a happy and comfortable 2nd and 3rd trimester. Even after I had my son, I continue to see my chiropractor, and I bring my son in to get adjusted now too.

My wife and I just had our first baby, and chiropractic care was a life-saver throughout her pregnancy. Without it, I don't know what we would have done. We also brought our new little daughter in when she was about 2 weeks old and the chiropractor checked her out too. We love our chiropractor!!!
