The sciatic nerve

Anyone who has ever had an attack of sciatica knows that the pain is so intense (and sometimes unexpected) that it can make you scream out loud. The pain shoots down your leg from your lower back and it can actually fly all the way down to your ankle and toes.

The sciatic nerve is the largest, that is, widest and longest nerve in your entire body. The pain comes when the sciatic nerve is pinched or irritated. The most common cause of sciatica is when the root of the nerve is pinched, or compressed, by a misaligned vertebra in the lower spine. When the pelvis or lower back vertebrae put undue pressure on the sciatic nerve…look out! That’s when the real suffering begins.

There can be many causes of sciatica, such as a herniated disc or a "slipped disc". Those can happen as a result of a fall or an accident. Other, though less common, are diabetes, arthritis, tumors or long-term pressure on the lower back area.

The most common cause is misalignment of the lower spine. Chiropractic can treat this and other causes by aligning the spine and enabling your nervous system to get back on track. It’s important to start sciatica treatment early on as harmful and long-term nerve damage can occur if it is left untreated for long periods.

A chiropractic exam, which may include x-rays, should be done as soon as there is any shooting pain starting at the buttocks and going down the leg. Once the location of the sciatic nerve blockage is discovered, your chiropractor can adjust the spine and properly re-align it. This will reduce the pain and the symptoms of sciatica.

In order to stay pain free and prevent more sciatica attacks, your chiropractor will try to understand the source of your spinal misalignment and treat that with a wellness program as opposed to just treating your symptoms.

The nice thing about chiropractic treatment is that it is drug free and non-surgical. The only side effects produced are good ones, such as reduction or elimination of pain, higher performance levels, less stiffness, better circulation and even lower blood pressure.
