Did you ever notice what professional athletes do before a big game or match? That’s right, they do stretching exercises. Why would anyone waste his or her time to do that? Good question. Perhaps it’s not a waste of time, but an important and integral part of training and conditioning, whether one is a professional athlete or just working out or going for a walk or run.

Your physical well-being and physical performance can be improved greatly just by stretching your muscles. Besides relieving stress, stretching also increases muscle flexibility, improves circulation and widens the range of motion in your joints. Amazing what a little stretching can do.

Athletes, as a general rule, stretch before they start their work out, practice, or actual competition. For those of us who are not athletes but still want the benefits of stretching, it is recommended to stretch about three times a week. This will maintain our muscles’ flexibility and keep us feeling younger and more vital than ever. Stretching is also great for those with tight muscles in their back or in the back of their legs. Stretching will relax this common muscle tension and relieve the stress and pain.

Yoga is a great way to stretch. For thousands of years yoga has been practiced in India and is now commonly enjoyed in the West. The gentle stretching of the joints, muscles, and tendons through the varied body postures have demonstrated remarkable improvements in practitioners’ flexibility, blood flow and circulation, and in many, an increase in overall health benefits. Yoga has also been shown to lower blood pressure and pulse rates while increasing energy levels, among many other benefits.

The nice thing about stretching is that it can be done anywhere. You can stretch at home, at the office, and even in the car. Stretching can be done just about any time or anywhere.

It can be done while you’re sitting, standing, working, relaxing or even watching TV. Stretching is obviously not a waste of time at all. Some would argue just the opposite, that it is a very intelligent use of any spare time and should be seen as a valuable tool for improving and maintaining one’s health.
